Why get your license in France

  • A French permis de conduire is valid across the EU and recognised worldwide.
  • The entire application runs online through ANTS — with a correct dossier you rarely need to visit an office.
  • Auto-écoles in Paris, Lyon, Nice and Bordeaux offer English-speaking instructors; we match you with one near your home or work.
  • France has clear exchange rules for many non-EU countries, and a defined post-Brexit path for UK licenses.
  • Flexible formats — from intensive courses to evening lessons — make it possible to fit training around a job.

How it works in France

1

Dossier and route check

We confirm whether you qualify for an échange de permis or need the full French route, and list exactly which documents your case requires.

2

ANTS application

We create and submit your ANTS file, upload every document in the required format and handle the requests for extra pieces that usually cause the delays.

3

Auto-école, code and conduite

For a new license: registration with a partner auto-école, the code de la route exam and the practical driving test. We book and monitor both.

4

Prefecture follow-up and delivery

We follow the file through the prefecture and ANTS until your permis is produced and sent to your address.

Documents you'll typically need

  • Passport or national ID
  • Justificatif de domicile — proof of address, less than 6 months old
  • ANTS-compliant ePhoto and digital signature
  • Medical certificate where your category or case requires one
  • Your current license plus a sworn translation for an échange
  • Residence permit or visa where applicable

The exact list depends on your city and your situation — we'll put together your personal checklist for free.

New license vs. exchange in France

Getting a new license

Without a previous license you follow the French route: registration with an auto-école, the code de la route theory exam, then a minimum of twenty hours of lessons before the practical test. We handle the school, the ANTS registration and every booking.

Exchanging a foreign license

Many non-EU licenses can be exchanged for a French permis within one year of establishing residence, if your country has reciprocity with France. UK licenses follow the specific post-Brexit rules. We check your reciprocity status and your deadline before anything else.

Frequently asked about France

Usually one year from the date your residence permit becomes valid. Missing that window means taking the full French exams, so we check your dates on day one.

The official code exam is in French, but translated preparation and language support exist. We build a preparation plan that fits your French level, and choose a school that supports it.

Rarely. Almost everything runs through ANTS. Where a prefecture step is unavoidable, we prepare the appointment and tell you exactly what to bring.
