Why get your license in Italy

An Italian patente is valid across the EU and widely recognised outside it.
Autoscuole handle much of the process locally, which makes the route predictable once your documents are correct.
Italy has conversion agreements with a number of non-EU countries — for those drivers, no exam is needed.
Lesson prices outside the largest cities are among the most reasonable in Western Europe.

How it works in Italy

Eligibility and document check

We verify whether your license can be converted under an existing agreement, or whether you need the full Italian route.

Autoscuola and Motorizzazione file

We register you with a partner autoscuola and submit the application to the Motorizzazione Civile, including the medical certificate and your codice fiscale.

Foglio rosa and exams

After the theory exam you receive the foglio rosa, which lets you practise. Then comes the practical exam. We book both and track the deadlines.

Your patente

The card is issued by the Motorizzazione Civile and normally delivered by post. We confirm issue and follow the delivery.

New license vs. exchange in Italy

Getting a new license

The Italian route starts with an autoscuola registration and the Motorizzazione file. You pass the theory exam, receive the foglio rosa, practise for up to a year and then take the practical exam. We manage the registrations, the deadlines and the fees.

Exchanging a foreign license

If Italy has a conversion agreement with your country, your license can be converted without exams — generally within one year of establishing residence. Without an agreement, the full Italian route applies. We check your case against the current list first.
