Why get your license in Italy

  • An Italian patente is valid across the EU and widely recognised outside it.
  • Autoscuole handle much of the process locally, which makes the route predictable once your documents are correct.
  • Italy has conversion agreements with a number of non-EU countries โ€” for those drivers, no exam is needed.
  • Lesson prices outside the largest cities are among the most reasonable in Western Europe.
  • In Milan, Rome and Florence we work with schools used to international students and English-speaking instructors.

How it works in Italy

1

Eligibility and document check

We verify whether your license can be converted under an existing agreement, or whether you need the full Italian route.

2

Autoscuola and Motorizzazione file

We register you with a partner autoscuola and submit the application to the Motorizzazione Civile, including the medical certificate and your codice fiscale.

3

Foglio rosa and exams

After the theory exam you receive the foglio rosa, which lets you practise. Then comes the practical exam. We book both and track the deadlines.

4

Your patente

The card is issued by the Motorizzazione Civile and normally delivered by post. We confirm issue and follow the delivery.

Documents you'll typically need

  • Passport or ID and codice fiscale
  • Proof of residence in an Italian comune
  • Certificato medico from an authorised doctor
  • Two passport photos
  • Your current license with a sworn translation for a conversione
  • Completed TT2112 application and payment receipts

The exact list depends on your city and your situation โ€” we'll put together your personal checklist for free.

New license vs. exchange in Italy

Getting a new license

The Italian route starts with an autoscuola registration and the Motorizzazione file. You pass the theory exam, receive the foglio rosa, practise for up to a year and then take the practical exam. We manage the registrations, the deadlines and the fees.

Exchanging a foreign license

If Italy has a conversion agreement with your country, your license can be converted without exams โ€” generally within one year of establishing residence. Without an agreement, the full Italian route applies. We check your case against the current list first.

Frequently asked about Italy

The exam is normally in Italian, with German and French versions in specific areas. We build the preparation around your Italian level and arrange support material in your language where possible.

It is the practice permit issued after you pass the theory exam. It lets you drive with a qualified accompanying driver while you prepare for the practical test.

Only if your country has a conversion agreement with Italy. We check the current list for your country and category and tell you honestly which route applies.
